Choose a video or audio file
Click Choose a video and pick a file up to 200 MB. This tool accepts audio files as well as video, so you can also use it to turn one audio format into another.
Pick your output format
Use the Convert to menu to choose MP3, M4A or WAV. MP3 is the safe default; pick WAV only if the software you are feeding it to specifically wants uncompressed audio.

Press Extract audio. After the one-time engine download the track is decoded locally, and a player appears so you can listen to the result before saving it.
What each output format gives you
MP3 is written with the LAME encoder at 192 kbps — the format nothing refuses to play, from car stereos and old MP3 players to podcast tools and every phone ever made. M4A uses AAC, also at 192 kbps, and is the better technical choice: AAC is a more modern codec that sounds cleaner than MP3 at the same bitrate, and it is what Apple software, iTunes and most modern platforms prefer. WAV is uncompressed 16-bit PCM, which produces files roughly ten times larger than the compressed options and is only worth choosing when the next step demands it — audio editors like Audacity, DAWs, transcription software and audio analysis tools often want uncompressed input. For simply listening, WAV gains you nothing over M4A but costs a great deal of disk space.
A note on quality that most tools skip
The audio inside a video file is already compressed, almost always as AAC. Pulling it out means decoding that track and re-encoding it into the format you asked for, so the result is a second-generation copy rather than an untouched original. At 192 kbps this is not something most people can hear, particularly on the podcast, lecture, interview and voice-memo material this tool is typically used for. But it does mean two things worth being clear about. Choosing WAV does not restore anything — it produces a large uncompressed file of audio that was already lossy, so it is bigger without being better. And repeatedly converting the same track between compressed formats will degrade it over time, so it is best to extract once from your original video and keep that file rather than re-converting the extraction later.
It works on audio files too
The file picker on this tool accepts audio as well as video, which quietly makes it an audio converter. You can load an M4A voice memo and save it as MP3 for a tool that will not read Apple formats, take a WAV recording and compress it to M4A to make it small enough to send, or turn an OGG or FLAC file into something a car stereo will accept. The same 192 kbps encoding applies, and the same caveat too: converting a lossy file to WAV makes it larger, not better. If you are starting from a genuine lossless source like FLAC, converting to WAV is the one case where nothing is lost.
How long extraction takes
This is the fastest tool in the set. Audio streams are tiny compared with video, and because the video track is discarded outright rather than re-encoded, there is no picture to process. Even a long recording — an hour-long lecture or interview — usually finishes in well under a minute once the engine has loaded. The 31 MB one-time engine download will normally take longer than the extraction itself. WAV output is the slowest option only because the resulting file is much larger to write.
If something goes wrong
If you get an error, the most common cause is a video with no audio track at all — a silent screen recording or a clip that was already muted has nothing to extract. Files over 200 MB are rejected before processing starts. If the audio plays but sounds wrong or cuts out early, the source track may use an unusual codec that decodes imperfectly; converting the whole video to MP4 first and then extracting from that usually fixes it. Very long WAV outputs can hit browser memory limits given their size, in which case choose M4A or MP3 instead.
Private by design
Because extraction happens on your device, your video and its audio are never sent anywhere and nothing is stored. Audio is often the most sensitive thing to hand to a stranger's server — recorded meetings, therapy or medical appointments, interviews with sources, legal calls, family voice memos. None of it is uploaded here. Please only extract audio from material you own or have the right to use; this tool is for your own recordings, not for taking audio from someone else's work.
